What Drinks Are Allowed in the Paleo Diet? The premise behind the diet is that humans should eat foods that don't require any technology to produce, which exempts most grains and dairy foods from the eating plan. The diet is quite restrictive and even dictates what kinds of beverages you're allowed to consume. Always talk to your doctor before starting the Paleo Diet to be sure it's healthy and right for you. Once you get approval from your physician, you'll be limited to just a few drink options. Water. According to Dr. Cordain on The Paleo Diet website, ancient humans quenched their thirst with pure water because that's all they had available to them. While you can certainly drink small amounts of other Paleo- approved drinks, the bulk of your liquid consumption should be plain water. If you don't think it tastes good, squeeze in lemon or lime juice to enhance the flavor. Mineral water and coconut water are acceptable, too. Wine and Other Alcoholic Drinks. Though it's discouraged to consume large amounts of alcohol on the Paleo Diet, small amounts of wine are acceptable. Even though human ancestors didn't have access to wine and alcohol in the same form as modern people, ancient humans might have consumed fermented beverages of some kind, according to Dr. Moderate drinking is defined as one drink per day for women and two drinks for men. One drink is equal to a 5- ounce glass of wine, according to Mayo. Clinic. com. Herbal Tea and Coffee. Herbal tea is permitted on the Paleo Diet – green tea in particular, according to the Every. Diet website. Cordain recommends that followers of the Paleo Diet avoid caffeine, so regular tea is out. Green tea contains small amounts of caffeine, but it also supplies beneficial antioxidants that make it an acceptable drink if you're following the Paleo Diet. Cordain recommends that you skip coffee, however, because the high caffeine content isn't good for your body. He states on his website that caffeine stimulates your nervous system, interferes with normal sleep habits and can give you a headache. Technically, decaffeinated coffee isn't on the list of acceptable beverages but many people who follow the Paleo Diet drink this version as they make the transition to a Paleo lifestyle. What's Not Allowed. There are far more drinks that aren't allowed on the Paleo Diet, including anything with added sugar. Cordain notes that ancient humans didn't eat added sugar, so soda and energy drinks aren't permitted. Even diet soda is off limits because it doesn't supply essential nutrients, even if it doesn't contain any added sugar. Fruit juice is a tricky drink. One hundred percent fruit juice doesn't contain any added sugar, but it's also stripped of the fiber that whole fruit supplies. Cordain recommends eating fruit in its whole form and limiting juice to an occasional glass. The entire dairy group is also off limits on the Paleo Diet, so you can't drink cow's milk either, but you can drink homemade almond milk in place of cow's milk. Photo Credits.
